I’m riding the AirTrain between terminals at San Francisco Airport when I notice a lone fellow traveler at the far end of the car. From my lap, I lift my old Rolleicord—a camera you focus from above. It’s discreet; he never notices. I wouldn’t have wanted to disturb his thoughts. We are both leaving San Francisco for somewhere else, each wrapped in our own quiet reflections. In that moment, distance, silence, and shared solitude fill the space between us.
